Gareth Lowe was a student when he first came to His People Grahamstown, South Africa. He and wife Taryn became the senior pastors in 2000, but as early as 1997, the burden for planting a church in Germany began in Gareth’s heart.

As he prayed for Germany one day in his office, his eye fell on a Time Magazine that he had not yet read – on the cover, the subtitle, ‘Germany’s School Massacre’.

He read the account of how a nineteen year-old German student shot twelve teachers, two students, one school administrator and one policeman in Erfurt, Germany before turning the gun on himself. “Some students had fled to the top floor of the school block and written on a large banner ‘Hilfe’ and stuck it in the window,” Gareth recounts. “I felt the youth of Germany were sending out a ‘Macedonian call’ for help.”

Gareth did something about the burden in his heart for Germany beyond praying. In December of 2007, he and his family  moved to Berlin. Here they are focusing on learning the language and culture as they prepare to launch the church in the near future.

“The significance of winning Germany for Christ can barely be overstated. Historian Paul Johnson claims that three Germans control the world we live in – Einstein, Freud and Marx. For better or for worse, Germany has arguably had the greatest impact of any nation on world affairs,” Gareth declares.
